Match Report by Stephen Connolly The boys welcomed the Elks to La Salle knowing a win would guarantee them a place in finals day. The boys were more than pumped, but it did not show in the first quarter as both teams concentrated more on defence than offence and the quarter finished 4-2. At the start of the second quarter the Tigers came out looking to increase the score, and some great steals from Jairus and Jay Tubera led to some fast break scores. The Tigers defence denied the Elks any scoring opportunities and big rebounds from Mairtin Bell, Mark Wilkinson and Peter O'Prey meant that the half would finish 20-2 to the Tigers. Feeling more comfortable on the court now the Tigers began to push for a bigger prize, the biggest home win of hte under 16 league. Currently held by rivals Donagh with a huge 51 point margin, Coach Stephen Connolly set the boys the challenge of winning by more...and the Tigers do love a challenge. The boys got on the scoreboard quickly at the start of the second half with Lee Steele adding to the score, and some great rebounds from Mark and Mairtin helped the Tigers extend their lead at the end of the third quarter, leading 34-2 going into the fourth. The biggest home win was still on the cards but the boys we need to add another 20 points in the last quarter without the Elks scoring another basket. The Elks stepped up their defence but they were no match for the eagerness of the Tigers to extend their lead. Great drives from Jay, Mark and Jairus meant the Tigers led 52-2 with 30 seconds left. One more basket was needed, but a travelling call turned possession over to the Elks. But the boys didn't give up and a great steal from Jairus gave Jay an open shot which he missed, but with the clock running out a great rebound from Mark helped him to score that final basket the Tigers needed, and with the game finishing 54-2, the Tigers boys now hold the Biggest home and away win of the season, and a ticket to finals day that they 100 percent deserve.
